It is not only the first book on Austrian pistols anyway but the ultimate book on early European self-loading pistols. It contains general chapters about various fields like patents, proofing arms in Austria-Hungary, the small arms system (procurement, testing, organisation) in the Imperial and Royal Austrian Armed Forces, and so on. In the main chapters of the individual pistol systems there are model tables of the pistols, remarks on the finish, serial number tables, ammunition data and all other details belonging to the guns.

The book is based on documents of the Austrian War Archives, Patent Office and various other public and private archives and collections. Guns of the most important special collections on the field in Europe and the USA have been photographed in excellent quality. Most of them are shown for the first time.

A lot of new facts are presented to the public, e.g. the exact amount of Steyr-Hahn and Roth-Steyr manufacture or sensational data of Borchardt and Luger pistols in connection with Austrian military trials. The book deals with the following pistol systems:
